Floss Like A Boss: Why Flossing Matters More Than You Think

4 October 2024

Keeping a healthy smile and looking after your teeth is essential, especially in your adult life, and flossing is a key part of maintaining good dental hygiene! Our blog is here to take a look at what flossing is and why it's so important for your mouth health! To learn more about flossing like a boss, keep on reading our blog.

What Is Flossing?

Dental floss is a thin type of floss, which you can use in between your teeth to get rid of any leftover food. Flossing is a key part of maintaining your oral hygiene, and dislodging food that gets stuck in between your teeth. While brushing your teeth does a good job of getting bigger food particles out, flossing gets into gaps and places that your toothbrush can't.

While most of us brush our teeth twice a day, which is a healthy habit, not everyone will floss on a regular basis. So, why is flossing so important? Keep reading to learn more.

Why Flossing Matters

It’s recommended that we should floss once a day, usually before bedtime, so that you can remove any food particles from your mouth before you sleep. This helps to remove any food from your mouth, leaving it cleaner overnight and preventing a range of problems.

  • Flossing helps to remove bacteria and other food particles that contribute to bad breath.
  • Flossing can help with removing plaque from below the gum line, especially in areas where your toothbrush can’t get to. This plaque can erode the enamel of your teeth, leaving you with tartar and discolouration over time.
  • If you’re worried about cavities, or already have a history with cavities, flossing can help you prevent them developing and worsening.
  • If you’ve experienced a lot of soreness, puffiness and redness in your gums, regular flossing can help to reduce this, and remove any food particles that might be irritating your gums.
  • Flossing is a very effective way to prevent gingivitis, and stop it from developing into periodontitis.
  • Flossing also helps with bad breath, which is often caused by bad oral hygiene. Sometimes bad breath can be caused by leftover food particles that your toothbrush can’t reach, leading to poor dental hygiene. Bad breath may also be a symptom of more serious conditions.
