3 Reasons to See an Emergency Dentist

Acorn Dental Health • 3 November 2022

No one wants to experience a situation where they need an emergency dentist, but it happens. You should be prepared in case you do need an emergency dental appointment, but when might this be necessary?

Here are some of the top reasons to seek emergency dental care.

You've Knocked Out a Tooth

Teeth that have been knocked out or severely loosened are an emergency. In many cases, if emergency dental care is sought within the first few hours of losing the tooth, it can be replaced. This can save you money and time, as dental implants are more complex than resetting an existing tooth.

If you do lose a tooth, you should carefully rinse it in a bowl of water. Put it back into its original gum socket and visit an emergency dentist as soon as possible, holding it in place in the meantime. If you can't get the tooth back in, you can place it in a little water or milk for the journey to the dentist.

You Have a Broken Tooth

Has a piece of your tooth broken off? Chips aren't a serious issue if they don't hurt. However, if a large piece of tooth has come out, you need to see a dentist. Even if there is no pain to begin with, the cracked piece can provide an opportunity for bacteria to get in and cause infection and decay. It's best to treat this as soon as possible to avoid further issues.

You Are in Pain

Too many people simply ignore tooth pain and avoid seeing a dentist for it. However, an intense toothache is an incredibly valid reason to seek an emergency dental appointment.

If you're experiencing pain in your teeth or gums, there are usually two possible reasons for it. First, you could have an infection or abscess in the tooth, which can be quite dangerous. Alternatively, you may be suffering from decay that has reached the nerve in your tooth. Both situations are serious and require immediate help. Not only is it painful to wait, but you could cause considerable damage to your teeth and overall oral health.

It is also worth noting that, if you have swelling alongside pain or a fever, you need to see a dentist immediately.

Are you experiencing any of the problems mentioned above? You should always have a reliable dentist on call for emergency situations. Contact Acorn Dental Health if you need an experienced emergency dentist in the Southampton area.
