When it comes to gum disease, red, swollen and bleeding gums are some of the most common symptoms. However, there are hidden warning signs that something may not be quite right with your mouth. To find out more about some of the hidden signs of gum disease, keep on reading!

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease which affects the gum tissues. In bad cases, it can cause teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. Some symptoms of gum disease can be subtle, but it’s still important to keep a look out for them.

Hidden Signs Of Gum Disease

There are many signs of gum disease to look out for, the most obvious being bleeding and swollen gums. Also if you’re noticing pain in your gums or other obvious signs, it might be time to visit your dentist for a check up. Keep reading to hear about the not so obvious signs of gum disease.

Bad Breath

If you find yourself persistently having bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, this could be a potential sign of gum disease. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily is a good way to mitigate this problem to stop food particles from getting stuck in your teeth. Food particles that are left in your mouth are the cause of bacterial growth, which will eventually lead to gum disease.

Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth are common in a lot of people and is completely normal, however, if you spot gum recession alongside tooth sensitivity, it could be a tell-tale sign of gum disease.

Wobbly Teeth

You may think that wobbly teeth are just a childhood phenomenon, but you are still at risk of wobbly teeth and losing teeth in your adult life too. Gum disease can cause gums to pull away from your teeth, creating gaps that can get easily infected. Damaged gum tissues struggle to hold your teeth in place and they may eventually fall out.

Receding Gums

Receding gums is a relatively common sign that something is not right with your gums, however it is not always obvious. It’s important to check your gums regularly and if you think they are inflamed then you should have a dental checkup as soon as possible!
