Dentures are a long-lasting solution for missing teeth. They can be worn attached to the natural teeth or using implants. Getting dentures for the first time, or if you're a seasoned professional can be stressful. This is a breakdown of the treatments we offer at our dental clinic.
You might be deciding between full and partial dentures. Full dentures are designed to completely replace missing teeth and are usually the ideal option when a patient has few or no natural teeth remaining. Contrast to partial dentures, which consist of replacement teeth attached to a plastic, gum coloured base, for specific missing teeth. They may be all plastic, or a mixture of metal and plastic, with clasps to keep the denture in your mouth.
Depending on your own choice, and the recommendations of a dental professional, you will choose either metal, plastic or a combination for your dentures. If you’re looking for resistance and durability, metal dentures are great. They are often a lot easier to adjust because they don’t take up as much space in the wearer’s mouth. Metal dentures are also said to feel more natural to wear, however, the price of metal dentures is higher than that of plastic ones. Plastic or Acrylic dentures are made of resin, and cause less irritation along the gum line. They look natural and happen to be in a more affordable price range. The downside to this is that they wear down quicker, meaning they need more frequent replacements.
These last about 5-7 years, but with proper care they can last up to 10. It’s a harder substance than acrylic, so it’s better designed to withstand daily wear and tear. They are more susceptible, however, to breaking while you’re cleaning them, unlike acrylic, which is less likely to break. They are a great option if you are looking for a partial denture, they work best with strong teeth that have good bone support.
These aren’t a denture option, however, they are another treatment that we offer. White fillings are sometimes considered cosmetic dentistry. They use a blend of plastic and fillers to create a white, tooth coloured resin. They are matched to your tooth colour, so that they don’t stand out as much as the typical silver fillings. They last 7 to 10 years, and are an incredibly strong treatment for most cavities.
