How To Care For Your Teeth Beyond Brushing

Acorn Dental Health • 29 March 2023

Some people simply brush their teeth twice a day and think that is all the dental hygiene they need. And while yes, brushing your teeth is extremely important, it is the bare minimum to be done to take care of your teeth.

Here at Acorn Dental Health, we are experts in dental hygiene, so have put together this guide on a few ways to take care of your teeth beyond brushing.

Mouthwash

Adding mouthwash to your dental routine is a quick and easy way to take care of your teeth beyond brushing. They are liquids packed with lots of beneficial ingredients that have a vast number of benefits. They can freshen your breath and remove food debris that may have been floating around your mouth, as well as protect against cavities due to the fluoride in them which strengthens enamel and kills bacteria. They can also fight gum disease and reduce sensitivity in your mouth. Some can even whiten your teeth if they have hydrogen peroxide in them. An alcohol-free mouthwash is the recommended one to go for, and you should wait 30 minutes after brushing to use mouthwash, as you can accidentally wash away the benefits of brushing.

Flossing

The main benefit of flossing is stopping the build-up of plaque between your teeth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing can also get rid of food trapped between your teeth that regular brushing may miss. This is important as if the food is left, it can begin to rot and give you bad breath. It is recommended to try and floss once a day before brushing, as it will free the food from between your teeth and allow it to easily wash away when brushing.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Even if your dental hygiene is amazing, it is important to visit your dentist regularly. They can examine your teeth and look for any signs of anything that might need fixing, such as gum disease, cavities or chipped teeth. They can also recommend dental hygiene techniques that you might be missing out on and think of specific products that might be beneficial to you, such as brands of mouthwash.
